Persepolis and Iran
Soon the class will be starting our new novel, Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. Persepolis is an autobiographical graphic novel which depicts Satrapi's childhood during and after the Islamic Revolution. The novel follows Satrapi from Iran to Vienna, Austria, back to Iran, and beyond.
Persepolis is an abbreviated history of Iran from its first occupation by Indo-European nomads, to the establishment of the Persian Empire, to the 1979 Islamic revolution. Satrapi writes that the purpose of her book is to show that Iran is not a country of fundamentalists and terrorists and that characterizations of the country by the West are inaccurate.
Before we start reading, we must be immersed in the country of Iran, the setting of the book, and the Iranian Revolution (a time of chaos and governmental change in the 1970s and 1980s).
